Yes, 4.88 is the biggest he could go. The D44 (that Big Red has in the front) can except a lower gear ratio (I believe a 5.13 maybe even a 5.38) but the 9.25 (rear axle) is the limiting factor with all of our trucks at 4.88's.
99% of the people who are running 38's or bigger on the 1/2 2nd gens will use the 4.88's, this is the best match for your truck.
Also I forgot to ask, do you have the OEM LSD (aka trashlock) in your rear end? It would be money well invested to go ahead and get rid of that junk and throw in an Auburn posi or better yet a Detroit if you wheel your truck while your in there.
Sorry to rant but again as I mentioned earlier in the thread, I would not invest money into your 1/2 ton axles and find a decent D60/70 combo to throw under your truck. I don't know how you drive and use your truck but to me it is a worthwhile investment especially if you are wheeling it. Just my two cents.
