10 days to go.
Since we are facing Irene, I have a story to share. In the Philippines hurricanes are called typhoons. About 3 years ago we were living 70 yards from the beach. We had a typhoon sitting on top of us for three days, it would wobble around a little but I have never seen it rain and blow for such a long time. No electricity, tv or news on what was happening. I was sure we were going to get flooded and asked a old man who lived there all his life and he told me not to worry as in all of his eighty some years it had never flooded. Well that night I hear loud yelling calling to me from my gate. I step out of bed into about a foot of water. It was just my grand daughter and me in the house. Scared the hell out of me. I didn't know if it was tidal surge or a nearby river over flowing. But it was coming up quick. I grabbed my light, wallet, cut the main power switches, woke my grand daughter got some rope and finally found my damn keys. In the PI you keep the house and grounds locked up tight. Water was over the top of the wheels on my van and flowing fast. Tied my grand daughter to the rope and helped a nieghbhor stay on her feet as we fought our way through the water to higher ground. Turned out it was the river that was over flowing from all the rain up in the mountains. But I want to say is this scared the hell out of me. It can go all wrong in a snap, and it happens fast, it's nothing to play with. Be prepared for the worst and hope for the best. OBTW, we now live on really high ground. I hope everyone gets out of harms way and are safe.
