Pentastar V6 production, already too low for the demand, has reportedly been dealt another setback. The engine, used in the Wrangler, Avenger, 200, Journey, Town & Country, Caravan, 300, Charger, and Challenger, and earmarked for the Ram, replaced the old 2.7, 3.5, 3.8, and 4.0 liter V6 engines, and is also to replace the 3.7 V6. Credible sources say that workers or managers in the Mexican plant took shortcuts to bolster production numbers, resulting in the 500 recalled cars and in thousands of built-but-not-delivered vehicles which will have to be examined and possibly repowered. The good news is both that actual customers received very few of the bad engines, and that Chrysler acted immediately, at great financial cost, to maintain quality.

The shortage comes just after the popular Jeep Wrangler, Chrysler’s second best selling vehicle, switched over to the new engine.
Chrysler has already been working behind the scenes to bolster production of the key six, by making parts which had been provided by inadequate suppliers, and, according to rumor, by refurbishing and re-equipping Trenton North instead of scrapping the plant.
The Trenton South plant added a ten-hour Sunday shift today to try to make up for lost production. Assembly lines rarely run on Sundays.
