Default Exhaust
I'm finally getting ready to start redoing my exhaust on the truck but have a couple of questions. I'm going to be running the PaceSetter long tubes, magnaflow cats and dynomax bullets. And that's about all I know for sure. Original plan was LT's to a y-pipe, cat, cutout, then single muffler dumped. Then I had a buddy suggest running an x-pipe and two mufflers, saying there wasn't a point in running headers into one muffler.
Needless to say, I'm a little torn as what to do. Any suggestions?

Mark,
IMO the headers are a big step up from the OEM manifolds. It is hard to believe that we are getting the performance we do from the stock manifolds as they are very restrictive. There is not a lot of room for exhaust under the truck and dual mufflers just waste space IMO. There are plenty of SI/DO mufflers. And if you are dumping the exhuast a big single muffler would work fine. I think dual cats are a must. I'm a bit thick headed but I don't think true duals do that much as you have to connect them to build low end power using a X or H pipe and frankly that is a added expense that isn't necessary in my book. So I would rcommend headers, Y pipe, dual cats, and a single muffler. Keep it as simple as possible. Good luck.

You think a full 3" exhaust would be overkill? Or should I just cut it back to 2.5" at the headers?

If it was me I would do all 3" to the muffler. If SI/SO I would do 3 out" and dump, if SI/DO piping then 2-1/2" out.

So here's the plan
LT's
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PSM-70-2213/
into a Y-pipe
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PSM-82-1183/
Single cat
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MPE-94039/
Single dumped bullet
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WLK-24219/

Question about the cat. Does the case length matter all that much? I don't want to have CEL's after all this.
And my cutout is 2.5". Should I reduce it at the cutout and leave it 2.5" back or just leave it out and sell it?

Mark I don't know if you have already pulled the trigger but I believe Magnaflow and a few other exhaust companies offer a muffler with an H-pipe built internally within the muffler.

Mark,
I was going to say use two cats, but after looking at your Y pipe I am not sure the cats can but snuggled into the Y pipe. I don't know how many o2 bungs you need, but the header collectors have one on each side and you will need one after the cat. I bought a cat that looks like the one you have listed that has two o2 bungs built into it. I just removed it from my truck and it is available or find the one at Summit that has the two bungs. The bullet muffler looks loud... Good luck..
