Floor shifter conversion
I have been wanting to do a floor shifter for a while. Finally decided on the TCI Fast gate. This is a gate shifter and it's appearance IMO fits well with the 3g interior. i was first concerned that the lever travel was such that it wouldn't fit well. But it turns out to fit nicely. The first position is for a four speed trans and is not used and the last position is for a GM trans that has a long throw for it's park, the park position is close but not bad when it is all adjusted. The 3g floor pan has a lip just in front of the seat which make the mounting a little challenging. I made a 1/8" plate and used only the front three mounting holes. Used the spacers to lift it a little and mounted the plate using sheet metal screws.. A 1" hole saw does fine for the cable hole. Underneath is really simple as the OEM brackets are used. The cable bracket requires two large washers and the shift lever just has a hole drilled into it. The bracket takes just a little tweaking to align it dead on. Linkage adjustment only took a couple tries and it was dead on. I got hung up trying to remove the steering column covers, I don't have a long reach allen wrench so off to the store tomorrow. Removing the lever and installing the new covers shouldn't take any effort. I'm going to remount the shifter again with some more spacers to raise it another 1/4", this will allow the cover to fit without trimming it. This will also require longer bolts than what came with the kit.The cover is much better quality then what I have seen with the hurst and B&M shifters. I'm going to like this once I get it installed the way I want it. In the picture you can see the cover is not sitting down like it should.

This is a bit of a necessity, not having trans support. This will allow me to manually shift out of 1st to 2nd. I have a shiftlight I'm installing to keep me on track with the shift points. Here is something I personally think is really cool and I might even give it a try, when I mount my 17's. Check it out http://www.hubcapmike.com/rdc02-17.html
We are talking "old school" here.

Pulled the shift lever, replaced the covers. And took the shifter apart and raised it another 1/2" and got it properly mounted. It works pretty cool. I like it.
There is a small hole under the ignition lock, anyone know what it's for?

Nick, the column lever is on the other side.
Paul, thanks,
I'm liking it the more I use it. Still need to mount OD button. The factory button doesn't lend itself to be reused. It is a momentary switch so no big deal, it can go anywhere.

Update, the hole is for the steering wheel lock. The standard steering column is different than the auto trans model.
