Today, my latest magnum purchase (CHANCE) is going in just to check alignment 'cuz it's lowered and I going to ask the mechanic IF he can tell how the lowering was done or type of springs.... anything he can tell me.

The Magnums worse "link" is the front suspension. ON all the forums you'll see most with some miles on them that they had to have front end work done, especially tie rod ends>

When we got Tees' 05 Magnum SXT, it was already lowered but the guy gave us the stock springs in the "DROPZONE" box those came in.

Hey Guys and Girls, finally got back home, and I'm getting a few things done. But what I think is a big deal is the Aeon springs I installed. They replace the bump stops and were orignally designed for increasing vehicle load capacity. But the smaller units do an amazing job of bump control. I have posted the details in the 3g section. Good luck..

Maybe start off with i went across town to get some really fresh tortillas and when I came back out I couldn't find my truck and then a week later when it was recovered look what they did..... It wouldn't fly in my house, but it might be worth a try....

Side note, I picked up four 275/60-20's mounted on rims for a fellow and those things are heavy. but looking at Red you wouldn't know she was carrying anything and she still rides and handles with perfect manners. Those Aeon springs do a great job. Now I'll shutup about them....

I know alot of S10 guys who do it...only to end up regretting it later, cause the ride quality afterwards goes to shit...

They also heat them up and compress them too, inturn losing spring rate, but dropping the truck as a result.

Redtruck-VA
04-12-2011, 08:17 AM
The aftermarket drop springs have a higher spring rate then the OEM springs. So OEM springs when cut are weaker. Smoke drops are criminal. IMO, any spring drop compomises ride quality to a certain extent. But I think the Aeon springs I have installed will save the day for me. I'm thinking 1/2 a coil might be enough. Anyone know how much to cut to get a inch drop?

Come on brother where is your sense of adventure. I bought a second set of springs to experiment with. The /..\ angle tires is your camber and that comes from the geometry being off from susppension height. One of the reasons I like the spindle drop over spring drop. But actually I put a little more camber into mine to get the wider tires to clear the fender lip. It is perfect as far as clearance goes with mine now as it sits. I can do full travel and not rub or scrape anything. I wish I had paid a little more attention when I had the front apart last time, but it seemed to me the bottom of the coil sits in a rubber seat and that can be turned around in the lower control arm. If that is so then cutting a 1/3 or half a coil from the top should be possible without binding the spring. I'll pull it apart in a day or so and see. Now if the 4.7 spring is shorter I'll just drop that in place of the 5.7 spring. I'll do a side by side comparison to see if there is any advantage of one spring over the other.

well shoot me and call me billy bob, if you got extra springs and dont mind the labor its worth a try, keep us posted...

It ain't labor it's called hot rodding...... oh yeah 3/5 drop.

I may move my rear Aeon bumps to the outside of the frame and mount them a little like helper airbags. It would give me another 1 inch or so of free travel.

OklaHemi
05-20-2011, 11:39 PM
that would be sweet, will you need to weld a bracket? i need to learn how to weld, i have been around it my who life but never tried

Redtruck-VA
05-21-2011, 08:47 AM
Mike, I've never been a good welder. 20 years ago I did passable welds in the shop, but if I wanted it really nice I'd have one of the real welders step in. A friend of mine lets me use his shop and I'll fabricate a mount and weld it to the frame.

SmokedRam
05-21-2011, 08:50 AM
I use to weld a bit when I worked as a shopping cart repair tech for Edwards Equipment Sales...one day I needed to run a few tack welds, figured I run them real quick with the mig and just close my eyes rather than use a shield...caught a case of flash in my right eye...it sucked...I have never used so much coffee creamer in my life.

Redtruck-VA
05-22-2011, 02:25 PM
Ok guys & girls, I installed the 4.7 coil springs. It is a little confusing, the two 4.7 springs I bought are 603"s the 5.7 springs I pulled from the truck are 604 on the drv side and a 602 on the pass side. The pass side has always sit about a 1/4" higher. It is now within a 1/8" when I returned from my test run. IDK, if you can tell if there is a difference or not. In my eye I can tell.

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/8177/img2011052200089.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/222/img2011052200089.jpg/)

Here is what I did, I got conflicting information on how much of a cut does what. so guessed. I measured 6" around the outside of the coil on the bottom and cut it.

http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/6945/img2011052200088.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/851/img2011052200088.jpg/)

We are very fortunate tha Dodge designed the front coil setup the way they did. The top of the spring sits in a rubber donut that can be positioned anywhere. This means the coil can be cut and the top will just sit in a new position without issues.

top of donut
http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/8593/img2011052200087.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/638/img2011052200087.jpg/)

bottom of donut
http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/8531/img2011052200086.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/706/img2011052200086.jpg/)

Took me just short of 4 hours, spending almost 3 hours on the driver side trying to figure out how much to cut and a hour on the passenger side. I got what I figure is about 5/8 of an inch. I'll drive it this week and see if it'll settle and if it doesn't then i'll cut it again. Not hard to do. All I did was jacke it up and put a stand under the frame. Put a jack under the LCA and lifted it to where the truck almost comes off the stand. Unbolt the sway bar link and removed the shock. Backed the lower ball joint nut off about 1/4". Lowered the jack and placed it under the lower ball joint nut and jacked it back up some and smacked the spindle boss in the area of the lball joint and it let go. Lifted the spindle up and placed a small piece of 2x4 under the uCA. There is no dangerous spring load, so lower the jack and remove it from under the LCA. I used a old axe handle to leverage the LCA down and pulled the spring. Afte cutting the spring just reverse the procedure. Nothing to it. Good luck.

Looking good Greg, this is definitely the old school way of doing it.

Redtruck-VA
05-23-2011, 07:07 AM
Mike, thank you for the kind words, very much appreciated.

Patrick, it is old school, as back in the day there weren't many parts available to buy so we just made do with what we had. i don't advocate lowering vehicles using primarily spring drops as spindles do a better job. But adjusting that final fit I see whacking the spring as the way to get it right.

Safety note: Gentlemen, take care of your eyes. As a retired machinist and having had metal removed and welding flash burns I'll put it simple. In your younger years the damage you do to your eyes will come back to you as you age and you may very well lose your eye sight. I have cataracts and have had lens replaced and still I am losing my vision. When doing your projects at home or in the shop wear your safety glasses, it's that simple.

Redtruck-VA

The flip kit has a 4-1/2 hole that I moved to this morning. Took about 20 minutes, jacked the rear up about 8 inches using a floor jack to take the load off the springs. Loosen the bolts, flex the spring by hand and pull the bolt, push the spring up to the next nole and slip the bolt back in the higher hole. Tighten the nut and repeat on the other side. The truck sits almost level with the ass a 1/4" higher than the front side to side it's level. The ride is firm but not harsh, the suspension is done......

We haven't had much action in the lowered section for awhile, so I would like to bring to folks attention the Timbren Aeon springs. I really believe in these things. They are absolutely necessary in the rear if you're dropped without a notch and in the front if you are not bagged. They are completely passive and can be abused by as much as you can give them. No more tippy toeing through dips and bumps. Fronts A140-65, rears A155-65. can be ordered from Ronald @757 675-6832. These are manufactured in Canada and dropped shipped to your address. I have no financial association with the seller/manufacturer. If you are new to my pitch for these, they simply replace the bump stops with a rubber spring of a given rating. i have increased the load carrying in the rear of Red by 1360 lbs without raising the ride height. Using these on lowered rides is a bit of a break through as they are not specifically manufactured for this purpose.

I cut the front springs I think 1/2 coil and 4in drop eibach leafs in the back and then nitro drop shocks I rub a little on bad dips but I ve learned to spot them out most of the time .

Mike, I haven't looked at those, as the p/n I provided are individual pieces as there is no kits for using these on lowered trucks, The rear sits within a 1/4" of the axle. The fronts I have adjusted so as not to rub.

With the Aeon springs you would not need to bother with avoiding anything you wouldn't normally avoid. I chase sport cars on the back roads here to the point I have seen them lifting wheels and Red stays planted. It's that good.

My next plate will either read LOWCLAS or NOCLASS I can't decide. I'm stuck with lowhemi for another year though.

I think "low Hemi" is a good plate.
I'm happy with my drop finally, but I'm going to shorter tires, so who knows where that will lead.

Greg, Red looks so good after the wheel swap. it reminds me so much of my 99 ram sport. how short are the tires you are going to get? i switched from 305/45 to 305/40 and i like it. its only a 1" difference but hey thats a 1/2" closer to the ground lol

I'm going to use 275/55-17 these are 28" my current tires are 275/60-17" which are 29". Not much of a change but puts an additional inch on the ground. I like the 17's.
