Rick Metts Age: 27
Born December 31, 1948
Died: March 4, 1976

Richard Ernest Metts

Testing at DeSoto Memorial Speedway, Bradenton, Florida
Pro Stock Plymouth Duster

He was instantly killed while testing his pro stock car. He lost control of the vehicle and smashed into a guard rail. He was traveling about 100 MPH when the car began fishtailing. It sped across the adjacent lane, slammed into the guard rail, then bounced up and cut a utility pole in half. When it came back down the car burst into flames. When Metts was thrown from the vehicle, his body was engulfed in flames. Track personnel tried to extinguish the fire, but were driven back by the intense heat. He lived in Salem, Ohio.

Richard Petty is the "Real Thing". Hardly any word or phrase can even begin to describe Richard Petty's grip on what creates an American legend. Fans call him, "The King", and rightly so, because that really just about says it all, along with his 200 career wins.

The Turbine was under the direction of Elwood Engel who had worked for the Ford Motor Company before his move to Chrysler. The designer credited with the actual look of the car was Charles Mashigan, who designed a two-seat show car called the Typhoon 5, and was displayed at the 1964 World's Fair in New York City. Engel used many older Ford styling themes.
