You should call up where you are going to buy them from and tell them what you are looking to do with the truck and let them match you up properly. Not saying nobody here knows, so no disrespect meant to anybody.

I wasn't trying to be a smartass, but think of it this way...lets say you are looking for a new cam. You can call up the machine shop...tell them what you are wanting to get out of your engine and they can let you know what and how to achieve it...you can do the same with your gears too. And by far the best advise you are ever gonna get is from the people making what you are looking for.

Here call up Moe's:

cams are diff than gears, joey go with 4.56 youll regret not doing so if you go 4.10 especially with those big wheels....

4.88's for sure with those 38's. If it were me I would throw in a D60/70 before you invest too much in those 1/2 tons especially if you wheel it

I understand what you are saying, but having the gear manufacturer recommend a gear ratio that matches your engine, tranny, purpose and environment is the way to go...

Well i have 3.92s and I am running 40's....

Im thinking instead of 4.88's, im going to go with a set of 4.56's

So based on that chart, with RamIt...the ideal gear to run would be 5.29, not the 4.56 unless you were going for more fuel economy....

Well the biggest we can fit in without swapping rear ends are 4.88s...

I think either 4.56's or 4.88's....

4.88's I've heard is the biggest. But I could be wrong.

GeorgiaRam

Yes, 4.88 is the biggest he could go. The D44 (that Big Red has in the front) can except a lower gear ratio (I believe a 5.13 maybe even a 5.38) but the 9.25 (rear axle) is the limiting factor with all of our trucks at 4.88's.

99% of the people who are running 38's or bigger on the 1/2 2nd gens will use the 4.88's, this is the best match for your truck.

Also I forgot to ask, do you have the OEM LSD (aka trashlock) in your rear end? It would be money well invested to go ahead and get rid of that junk and throw in an Auburn posi or better yet a Detroit if you wheel your truck while your in there.

Sorry to rant but again as I mentioned earlier in the thread, I would not invest money into your 1/2 ton axles and find a decent D60/70 combo to throw under your truck. I don't know how you drive and use your truck but to me it is a worthwhile investment especially if you are wheeling it. Just my two cents.
