Was sitting in drive through today and the truck starts revving up to about 5 grand. I threw it in park and cut it off. Cranked it back up and it ran fine. Took it to advanced and they couldn't find any codes. The only light that came on when this happened was the ETC (Lightning Bolt). Any ideas?

Hmm, have you ever cleaned out the throttle body? It might have gotten stuck open. Either that or the Idle control Motor inside the thing is giving out.

Here is my DIY on cleaning the TB, it takes about an hour tops. Easy thing to eliminate.

My guess you were pushing on the gas pedal while getting money out of your pocket. I would try resetting the PCM to see if you can get a fresh code. good luck.

I wasnt. Foot was on the brake, had already paid was waiting on food. Truck didnt surge or anything just the RPM's shot up. Ran rough for a couple minutes after I restarted it but cleared up once I got on US1. Will clean the TB tomorrow after work, had already planned on it. Hoping its nothing worse than that.

Agree with Daniel and Greg's Ideas on a possible remedy. Lightning Bolt for me is Limp Mode and 1500 RPM....LOl..

Not a Ram... But my mom's Chrysler 300 used to do that. She would just be going down the road and that light came on and threw it into limp mode. Pretty weird...

I did reset the PCM before I left advanced. Still no codes given. I just hope this dont happen going down the highway. Runaway Ram.

I use a piggyback tuner on my truck that modifies the MAP signal to richen or lean the tune. This works in conjunction with the PCM and the goal is to minimize the short trim numbers. If the tune drives the MAP value outside the pre-determined parameters it will throw the lighting bolt. Also if you manually push on the butterfly, again you can get a lighting bolt. The lighting bolt most often will put the truck into limp mode. When the ignition is first turned on the PCM closes the TB completely and registers the value. This self calibration, establishes a value for the PCM to then adjust the idle motor to maintain a PCM determined idle. The primary inputs are the MAP, O2 sensors, Crank sensor, TPS/ICM. Controlled by the APPS (acellerator pedal position sensor). if anythig gets out of sync in this loop it'll cause the engine to run erratic and you will get a lighting bolt. Dirty TB, loose plug, water, broken wire, component failure and bad fuel can be the problem. Good luck

Got her clean. It was BLACK. But now its making a weird noise when turning key to on position. Runs fine though? Heres a cell phone picture. Kinda hard to see how nasty it was.

Noise is gone and so far no problems. Can't reallly tell a difference in response. But it was kinda like a whining noise.

Might try another PCM reset. After the reboot. don't touch the gas pedal and turn the ign on for 10 seconds, turn off and then start normal. Good luck.

Already did that. Reset it 3 times as a matter of fact. First time, normal reset. Second time, I pressed the accelerator down to floor slowly and let up slowly. Then another normal reset. Cranked it up after each time.

The procedure of pushing the accelerator pedal down slowly is for diesels.

Oh.. Well I tried it anyway. Didn't do much of anything anyway. On the way home it did seem like throttle was a bit smoother. No delay when I stomp on it. I typed that one bit when I was downtown.

Used to be when I smashed the gas itd jump whenever it wanted. Now its more of a launch.
