Well, as some of you know, I have been having sporatic transmission problems...not enough that it scares me to drive Ruby, but they are sporatic. So after getting a bunch of quotes and reading reviews, if all goes well, Ruby will be having a rebuilt trans put into her. Within the next 2 weeks.

She will be making the trip to Leesburg to a trans shop there, who will install a lifetime warranteed 46re and go ahead and install new freeze plugs in the back of my block for $950 out the door.

This guy buy far beats anyones quotes thus far...one shop in Tampa "Performance Transmissions" quoted me $2100 just for the trans rebuild and a lifetime warranty...another place in New Port Richey quoted me $1200...

I will let you all know how it all goes, as I promised the guy I would spread the word about his business if all goes well.

That is a wide spread in quotes. You sure you are comparing apples with apples?

Well, the guy who quoted me $2100 does mostly classic restorations and does a little more to the trans than some shops do which would be nice, if I could afford it...

I am finding more shops that are right inline with the one I will be using and are within $100 or so $$$. One shop in New Port Richey quoted me right at $1000, however they come with a list of bad reviews, that scares me. The one shop in Leesburg, I haven seen or heard of a bad review yet, are BBB members, are a AAA certified repair shop.

Way to search out the best deal and best place to have the service done. I know you will be like and expectant father waiting for Ruby to come home. All the best in the upcoming procedure.

I talked to the guy today...he says it will only be a 1 day job...he does ALOT of our 46re trannies and has them already ready to install...so she wont be down for long.

What happened to the trans? Why did it go out so soon?

What happened to the trans? Why did it go out so soon?

I think it was from my uncles's father in law overloading the truck and towing it t Georgia...but I really have no idea. I am a pretty light driver...keep it under 65, dont rev it past 2300 RPM...trans fluid is good, filter was replaced and stuff before my cousin gave it to me.

And it is not "out" yet...just once in a while I get no 1-2 up shift and sometimes no 3-2 downshift...when it wont upshift up, if I stop the truck, put it back in park then back in drive it runs perfect...other than that, no probs...it is more than likely a electronic issue somewhere...but for peace of mind with the lifetime warranty, I am just having a rebuilt unit put in...

You don't think it has something to do with the pcm do you?

well, we made it up there at like 9:30AM...guy said I wall need a new trans cooler too, or he wouldnt honor the warranty...thats gonna be $125 more, installed...so the total is $1075 complete. He said it would be ready by 2PM tomorrow afternoon.

Yeah, the owner of the shop is a pretty straight up guy...since I was going to be taking the check valve out of the cooler line anyway, I asked him his opinion on it. He said that on the Ram trucks, he prefers to delete the whole stock trans cooling system and go aftermarket.

Good thing it's getting fixed

Yeah thank goodness...I know most people delete the check valve on the gen 2's and I never got around to doing it. When I told the guy I still had it on there, he laughed and asked why I never took it out.

So Colton, if you still have your check valve in your trans line, look into removing it.

Wheres the check valve at?

SmokedRam
07-11-2011, 06:43 PM
coming off the radiator you have two lines that go to the transmission...the TOP one, has the check valve in it. To delete it, you need to get a quick connect tool to get the line off the radiator, then get two wrenches and take the rubber line off the metal line...then you get some hose clamps and about 2 feet of transmission hose from the parts store and attach it in the spot you removed the the old line from.

Okie dokie, Ruby is home now...the guy said my valve body was trashed, literally full of metal and clutch material. Got in it and this thing shifts perfect...it has nice firm shifts, not sissy shifts like a car would have. they ended up having to replace 3 freeze plugs all together and as stated earlier they installed a trans cooler, which is HUGE...here is a pic of the cooler...not really much to show with the trans and freeze plugs. I cant say how stoked I am right now...

Just wanted to update this a little...

as for the transmission, this thing is FLAWLESS...shifts are crisp and firm...

As for the freeze plus replacement...I havent had to add any coolant to it since I got it back from the trans shop
