View Full Version : To Plasti-Dip, or Not To Plasti-Dip; That Is The Question

UnderCover

After looking at pictures, and reading other forums about Plasti-Dip, I'm seriously considering doing my wheels. I love the chrome look of my wheels, but there's something about a charger with black wheels that just looks B.A.

So do y'all think I should leave the chrome clad as is, or do the deed and go with the black?

That's not happening for a long time... We got a wedding to pay for... I figure at least this way I could see if I like it, and peel it off if I don't.

I think black wheels would look awesome on your car Art, but I agree with Daniel.

if you feel the cause than paint them yourself w/ real paint

I may do it at first to see how it looks. If I fall in love with it, I may paint them.. However, I'm not about to just go and paint $900 factory rims without seeing how it will actually look on the car first.

Tried it, but I physically want to see it on the vehicle so I can see it from different angles and lighting.

I'm pretty sure the r/ts had the solid chrome, as opposed to the aluminum plastic capped chrome rims.

Nope - Chrome Clad..

But the whole point is I want to see what it looks like first on the vehicle before I do anything permanent.

I was thinking about that last night. I saw the same black chrome stuff. But again, I don't wanna just paint it without at least getting some kind of idea what it looks like at first. At least with the plasti dip, if i don't like it, 10 minutes later it's off

Chrome Clad means it's an aluminum wheel with a plastic chrome looking overlay on the front. It's not a true chrome wheel. Pretty shitty of chrysler, especially becuase a replacement wheel is over 9 bills....

SmokedRam

Man, I dont think really that the plasticoat will give you a TRUE idea of what they will look like...it would if you were looking to do satin black powder coat...and then you are gonna waste damn near $40 if you decide to peel it off later.

I would get a good pic and photochop it before I did all that.

DO IT...

Worse case scenario, you DONT like it, it looks crappy, you peel it off and you are out like 20 bucks...

Best case scenario is you LOVE it, it looks AWESOME, you dont peel it off, and it only cost like 20 bucks to give UC a WHOLE NEW LOOK...

Try it to see if you like it. And tons of cars now have chrome clad wheels from ford, to gm, to dodge, chrysler, and jeep. I think some foreign cars have it too, just can't remember which ones. There are very few actual chrome wheels, I think the chrome srt wheels and the 2011 ram R/T 22s like on my truck are the only ones from dodge, chrysler, and jeep that are real chrome

you can go to www.finishlinewheel.com and get some real nice polished aluminum ones from the 09 model year...

Art - you gotta do want you feel is right. If the plasti-coat is so reasonable. I say what have you got to lose. Maybe you lose a dinner out, but you will see in person what you are trying to see. If you don't like it peel it off and say okay, Done.

I think Kevin is right. It needs a matte black spoiler to finish the look. You have the black bush guard, black rims. You need something on the rear of the car and the spoiler would be perfect.

ive never seen powder coat chip or peel off, its pretty much the toughest paint you can get. well worth the price as well. harbor freight and northern tool have a powdercoating kit i believe, all you need to do is just bake the parts in an oven (buy a cheap off of craigslist to use for that purpose and nothing else)

FYI to ART: There's a powdercoating place on Anderson Road in Tampa (off Hillsborough) that the sign company my dad use to work for uses quite a bit...they do good work and are reasonably priced.

If you want their name/number to call to get an estimate let me know and I'll get it from Dad.
