How hard is it to remove the O/L greg?

Not hard, Have a jack stand under the frame with the wheel off and the axle hanging. I would remove the OEM shackle and undo the axle/spring U bolts so you can remove the spring pack center bolt. I used a "C" clamp to control the spring release. Remove the o/l spring from the pack. I used a philips screw driver stuck in the center bolt hole and tightened the spring pack back up using the "c" clamp to re-installed the center bolt. There is an alignment (split) pin that needs to be cut flush after the o/l is removed. I used a hand grinder. Then bolt it back together using the drop shackle. I did one side at a time. Piece of cake.

Hey greg and jay did you guys remove your overload spring? I am wondering if that is easy enough to do at the same time tomorrow.

shadow11
05-13-2011, 12:00 AM
When I removed the o/l on my 05 it was a pain in the ass. I would just go with the drop shackles and leave the o/l leaf on. If you take it off the back will be a little lower than the front and you won't be able to haul very much weight.

AWE Daniel
05-13-2011, 12:04 AM
Thats prob what I will end up doing shadow, I dont think my guy has enough time to get into the whole spring process tomorrow anyway.

BAD HABIT

i did it all in like an hr and half, my front is no where near higher in the front, i think my rear is sstill a half inch higher, i haul stuff and as long as its a normal load its fine....

heres what i have D....
directions to change drop shackles....
with your truck elevated on jack stands, place hydraulic jack under the rear axle and raise it until the weight is removed from the leaf spring. loosen and remove shackle bolts, and remove the stock shackle. install your new lowering shackle, tighten bolts, donot over tighten(this will cause squeaks and binding) remove the jack and jack stands your. ready to go!!!

and while you have the leafs loose just undo all the axle bolts(4) and drop the axle down(or lift truck up) and disassemble leaf pack, one bolt. and then remove the bottom spring it has a pin in it also, i used a flat bar and pried it off. reassemble the leafs with the bolt and put axle back together with 4 u-bolts and tighten everything down then attach drop shackles to truck and remove all jacks and stands....

Absolutely do it all at once otherwise you will have to go back and redo much of the work. Caleb, I don't agree with you, they are called overload spring for a reason. I pull my trailer and use my truck for normal hualing and when I pulled the O/L years ago they had never touched the other springs. Unless you overload your truck IMO, you don't need them. Just extra wieght. Remove them and don't look back. It took me about 2 hours to remove the springs and install the shackles with the truck on the ground using jack stands and floor jack.

My truck sat level with the shackles and O/L removed.

Post #13 also has some info on how I did mine.

Don't have measurements of your cat but you might get by with muffler clamps and a sawsall to cut the pipe. Just thinking out loud.

Back in the day we never really gave it any thought other than "exhaust stunk". But now within our personal enviorment we can choose. I prefer running cats and had these as a backup if the ones I currently have didn't workout.
